Motivation is a tricky thing.

Sometimes, in order to get motivated to do something, you need to start doing it. That’s how reading Scripture often goes for me. The discipline helps to create the desire.

Other times, we need motivation to begin (or continue) doing something. Things like watching a great movie, hearing a great song, reading a great book, or having a great conversation inspire me to keep pressing on.

It’s easy for me to overvalue discipline and undervalue motivation. I know what a trap it is to live by emotion.

But I’m learning that if don’t regularly stoke the motivational fire, I tend to burn out quickly. Motivation matters.

What are you doing to stay motivated for the things that matter?
