Virtual Escapism

US-IT-CONSUMER ELECTRONICS SHOW-CES

This could be huge.

Facebook is about to purchase Occulus VR, the creator of a virtual reality headset already making waves without Zuckerberg’s help. Sony is working on their own model for the Playstation 4.

Finally, after all these years, the technology has caught up to the promise, and we’re getting virtual reality that actually feels like that.

Is this a good thing or a bad thing? Depends on how it’s used. As with most technology, it’s up to us to decide if we enjoy and employ it for good or evil.

My concern is not with the technology itself but for the people who will inevitably use it to sink further into escapism. For them, it will be like a more powerful drug than the one they’re currently using.

You and I were made to live with real – not virtual – purpose, meaning, and vision. We were created to live in and shape a true story, not be eclipsed by a false one.

Jesus said,

“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” John 10:10

God wants to give us real life as we know him and join with his people in building his kingdom. If Satan (the thief) can get us to invest the best of our lives in a fantasy world, he wins…whether that world is in a virtual reality headset or a paperback novel.
